About Tom

I've been doing this more than a decade and I still haven't got bored of it

Tom Ryder, singer and acoustic guitarist, Stansted, Essex.

How it started

I picked up a guitar when I was 12 and haven't really put it down since. What started as open mic nights and local pubs turned into regular wedding bookings, and once I realised how much I loved being part of someone's biggest day, I made it my full-time job.

Where it's taken me

Since then I've played more than 400 weddings at venues across the UK. Country houses in Hertfordshire, barns in Cambridgeshire, rooftop terraces in London, coastal venues in Cornwall. I've also been lucky enough to play destination weddings in Italy and Croatia.

Why it stays interesting

Every wedding is different and that's the whole point. Some couples want soft, romantic background music through the ceremony. Others want a proper singalong by the evening. I've had guests forming a conga line to Mr Brightside, and I've had an entire room in tears during a walk-in. Both are equally brilliant and I genuinely don't have a preference.

What I promise

I'll arrive early. I'll set up quietly, without walking through your photographs with a speaker stand. I'll play to a professional standard. And I'll read the room, so the music fits the moment rather than the setlist.

I carry backup equipment to every single wedding. I'm responsive and straightforward in the planning stages, which sounds like a low bar until you've tried booking a few suppliers. And I care about getting it right, which is a hard thing to prove on a website and an easy thing to prove on a phone call.

I'm fully insured with public liability cover, which most venues will ask to see before they'll let a live performer on site. I'll send the certificate straight to yours.

Away from weddings

When I'm not at a wedding I'm at home in Stansted with my family, usually with a guitar somewhere within reach.
